HISTORY

Greetings from former students:

"A school that is to hard to really leave."

The history of our school After the war association called Evangelical Youth got an idea to found an evangelical folk high school and during a meeting in December year 1946 was a guarantee society for mentioned school founded. Despite some adversities school was able to start it's activity in June year 1947.

As it was just a time after the war many things were lacking, so an apple donation just before the opening in November 1947 was extremely relevant. School's cook Greta Selenius and handcrafts teacher Helena Lindqvist made baked apples with vanilla sauce which was understood as a real festivity dish.

Since then there is a popular on going tradition in this school which is called Student union days. That is a weekend once a year when students from previous years come together to meet again and to meet new students in this school. That is a great possibility for good fellowship in Christian atmosphere. These times give an insight of how meaningful school has been to so many people who return again and again to meet each other every year.

Association Evangelical Youth had been working hard already from the very beginning to gather donations. The meaning was - to give scholarship possibilities for financially less fortunate students who wouldn't be able to study here without this gift. This practice is still continuing, as school each year has scholarship students from Baltic countries Latvia and Estonia, as well our own country. Since school year 2005-2006 we have had also two scholarships from Finland, which were given by the friends of our school.

Teaching and study range in the school has varied during these years, but always the Christian perspective has been a solid foundation. In year 1970, a structure transformation was made in all folk high schools, as students were no more interested in a general study range. That is when school started inventing and founding new programs, for example - Missionary and culture program, film and video program, journalism program, Baltic cultures program, study program and weaving and handicraft program etc. There is a new program since year 2005 - 2006, called Performance Art program.

Also a yearly trip to Österbotten has a long history. In the beginning it was only school's headmaster who went there and visited school's friends who live in Österbotten. But now, already for quite a long time also students participate in this trip. They altogether take part in church services and different other gatherings and meetings. Very often students also participate and perform in those meetings - with songs, music and drama performance. At the same time they also get a possibility for sight-seeing. There is another trip which has also become a tradition - trip to Baltic countries. That is a time when students together with headmistress and different teachers visit Baltic countries to get to know history and culture of those countries. Also each year a movie about this trip is made by students who study in Film and video program.

With a thought that in year 2008 school is celebrating 60th birthday, we can see and understand that this is a vital and life strong school, where you can feel cozy atmosphere and see great care for each other. Many students have come back to this school and become teachers here and many who have worked here previously have returned to work here again.
